When the sun is shining and you’re having a blast enjoying some fun in the sun, it’s easy to forget just how damaging those golden rays can be. Protecting your skin from the sun is vital for preventing sun burn (which increases the risk of skin cancer) and dry, weathered-looking skin. So what can you do to prevent sun damage? Before heading outside this summer, follow these five simple skin care tips to enjoy your time in the sunshine without damaging your skin!

5. Stay Hydrated and Moisturized

When the sun warms our bodies, we tend to lose water at an alarming rate. We glisten, drip, sweat and lose a ton of moisture. Dry skin is more prone to cracking, blemishes and sun burn. Drinking enough water while spending time outside can go a long ways toward keeping your skin moisturized. In addition to drinking water, you can also get a water-based moisturizer to periodically apply to your skin. Many sunscreen products contain natural moisturizers that can help.

4. Use Sunscreen For Exposed Skin!

Always wear sunscreen when spending lots of time outdoors. Even on cloudy days, your skin can still be damaged by piercing ultraviolet rays. Make liberal use of sunscreen before heading outdoors, and invest in waterproof sunscreen if you plan on taking a dip. Whenever possible, have someone help you apply sunscreen to hard-to-reach areas. Be sure to reapply your sunscreen after every couple of hours you spend outside. This is the best way to prevent the occurrence of skin cancer.

3. Exfoliate Every Day!

It’s easy to enjoy smooth, clear skin when you use exfoliating cream each morning. During the summer, many people sweat while sleeping because of warmer nighttime temperatures. If you are one of those people, then exfoliating in the morning can help keep your skin clear and fresh. Getting rid of dead skin cells can help keep your pores open and help your body maintain its normal moisturizing cycles.
