6 Reasons Giving Your Ex a Second Chance is a Bad Idea

Breaking up is never easy, but sometimes the best thing you can do for yourself is to walk away from a situation you’re not happy in. After the breakup, missing the other person is normal, and you’ll likely be left with a lot of “what ifs,” but as much as you might think hooking back up with your ex is a good idea, it’s almost always a terrible one. So, before you hit send on that “I miss you, too” text or leave another blubbering voicemail, keep these six things in mind.

6. Things Didn’t Work Out For A Reason

First and foremost, you’ve got to face the facts. In the midst of a heartache, it’s easy to remember only the good parts of your relationship together, while glossing over the reasons you broke up in the first place. But you know things weren’t always that good, because the two of you broke it off for a reason. Try to remember what that reason was, and ask yourself if you really want to go through that mess again. Our guess is that you probably don’t. Put the phone down.

5. You’ve Already Made Progress In Moving On

Listen, the worst of it is probably already over. You’ve gone through the actual breakup itself and drowned your sorrows in pints of Ben & Jerry’s for the past few days, and you’re finally starting to feel just a little bit better. This is not the time to go backward by answering any of the sweet text messages he keeps sending you saying how much he misses you. If history serves as any indication, going back to him will only land you right back where you started from, and Ben & Jerry’s pints aren’t exactly cheap.

4. His Motives May Not Be What You Think They Are

He says he misses you and wants to see you. He swears all he wants to do is talk. He needs closure or something, right? Stop right there. What do you suppose the chances really are that he’s changed significantly in the three days since the two of you broke up? Probably slim to none, right? So, while his mouth might be saying he “just wants to talk” there’s a pretty good chance he’s hoping for more than just some closure. Do yourself a favor and cut your losses while you’re ahead.
