Shutterstock.com

Genital herpes is one of the most common and highly contagious sexually transmitted infections around. Since herpes is one of the few STIs that has no cure, your best bet is to avoid it entirely, and that means knowing what to look out for. Check out the slideshow to learn more about the symptoms of genital herpes, along with a few helpful tips to keep your sex life healthy, happy and STI free!

First of all, you should know that not everyone who gets genital herpes has symptoms. The only way to know for sure whether or not you have genital herpes is to get an STI/STD test from your doctor or local clinic.

We repeat: No symptoms doesn’t necessarily mean no herpes!

Just like you can’t really tell that you don’t have herpes based on a lack of symptoms, you also can’t tell just by looking at someone whether or not they have herpes. You can get genital herpes even if your partner doesn’t show any outward signs of infection.

You should always practice safe sex with your partner(s) unless you are in a long-term, monogamous relationship and have both been tested for STIs. However, you should also keep in mind that, while condoms may reduce your risk, you can still get genital herpes (and other STIs) while using a condom. In other words, just because you used a condom doesn’t mean you might not have genital herpes. Check the symptoms…
