Trying out a new brand of lipstick, eye shadow or mascara can be exciting, but do you ever wonder about the chemicals used in cosmetic products? Some cosmetic brands emphasize using natural compounds and gentle chemicals, while other brands lean on risky additives for their color, texture and moisturizing properties.

Crafting your own makeup is a great way to control what goes onto your body. Typically, homemade recipes have fewer ingredients and are more affordable. In just a small amount of time, you can create your own makeup products that will leave you feeling fresh and beautiful.

Where to Start

Creating your own foundation is a great place to start. You’ll need arrowroot powder (a type of starch), cocoa powder and cinnamon. Blend these ingredients together; adding different amounts of cocoa powder and cinnamon lets you match your foundation to your skin tone. If you prefer liquid foundation, just add a few drops of coconut or jojoba oil. This foundation can be stored in your refrigerator to extend its shelf life.

Lipstick and Gloss

No makeup is complete without lipstick or lip gloss. Fortunately, lip stick, balm and lip gloss are all easy to make. When making lip makeup, you can easily make several different colors all at once, so we recommend getting some small jars for creating and storing your finished products. For a yummy coconut lip gloss, simply blend a teaspoon of coconut oil and petroleum jelly in one of your jars. Another easy lipstick recipe is to add a couple drops of almond oil, about a tablespoon of grated beeswax and a few drops of beet root powder. Once you’ve placed your ingredients in a jar, place the jar over heat until the ingredients melt together. For applicators, just get a box of Q-tips.

Homemade Fragrances

Complete your look with a fresh fragrance make especially for you. When making perfume, remember that less is more. Don’t use anything you might be allergic to, and a good rule of thumb is to use no more than four ingredients at a time. Vodka is often used in homemade fragrances, and you can experiment with various other products to create new scents. For starters, try 1/4 cup of vodka and 1/4 cup of water, then add about three drops of your favorite essential oil. Homemade perfumes can last as long as six months.

Look Great and Save Money

Creating your own makeup is not only fun, but also easy and affordable. It doesn’t take much to craft your own cosmetics, and the money you save could be put toward other things. Perhaps you could wear your homemade makeup and use the money you’ve saved during your next night on the town!
